Family Practice is an area of medicine that generally involves care of patients ranging from infants to the to the geriatric population. The Family Practitioner is the “gatekeeper” and as such plays a vital and important role in coordinating patient care. Many family practices employ physician assistants.

 

Patients generally form close relationships with their family practitioner much as they would with their minister. A close and open relationship between the patient and provider in this clinical situation often times assists in preventing medical malpractice suits especially in a situation where the provider admits an error and apologizes for his or her mistake. Patients want and expect openness and honesty from their physician and physician assistant. Providing this is the second most important responsibility of family medicine with the first being competence.

 

Unfortunately, even with the best intentions and attempts at resolution of an issue an impasse is reached and legal consultation with an attorney is necessary.
