Correctional Medicine Expert Witness
Correctional Medicine involves the delivery of medical care to persons incarcerated in the jails and prisons across the nation.
The practice of medicine is the same whether providing health care in the community or the correctional environment; the standard of care remains the same. Many states now outsource medical care to third party companies who hire contractual physicians, physician assistants, nurse practitioners and nurses to provide total medical care to the inmate population.
Due to the diverse population in our prisons and the lack of proactive health maintenance prior to incarceration, many of the inmates have serious illnesses not ordinarily seen in the local community in such a concentrated number. This, combined often times with poor patient compliance, mental illness, personality disorders, etc. makes practicing correctional medicine a challenging and educational experience. It is an environment that fosters litigation, not only in the area of medical malpractice or negligence but also intentional torts filed under the Eight Amendment.
The utilization of a physician assistant expert who has correctional medical experience can be of extreme value to an attorney especially one unfamiliar with the correctional setting and its unique environment.
